Give the storyteller an editor and a list

Nobody wants to write another newsletter nobody reads. Storytellers need to know what people want to learn, and an Editor who backs them to the finish.

Give the storyteller an editor and a list

No one wants to write another newsletter that nobody is interested in. We have to give our storytellers information about what people want to learn about, and then help them make something people want to read.

In UnityUpdates that information lives on the desk. Each beat has a cadence and the date it was last covered, so a beat that has gone quiet shows up before anyone complains about it. Tips and reader questions from members land there too, and so do assignments, each with an angle, who to call and what to ask for.

The Editor is the person the community trusts to drive stories forward. They hand assignments out by name, because a request addressed to everyone is addressed to nobody. In the first year most of the job is training: a short clinic before someone's first interview, a hand on their first draft. They publish on a day people can count on, and they own the corrections so the Reporter doesn't carry that alone.

Personal value is the kind of value we receive from being active instead of passive, creative instead of consumptive.

A Reporter is any member who wants to do the work. They pick up an assignment or get handed one, and take it from an idea to a finished story. When they hit a gap, they post a Callout to the community. Who was at that meeting? Who has that document? The answers become sources.

What if every beat in your community had someone assigned to it? What if the people who wanted to write knew which stories their neighbours were waiting for? What if they had an Editor in their corner when the first draft came back covered in questions? UnityUpdates is my attempt at building that desk.
